MSU SADA Fashion Show

On Saturday, Tieka came down to Lansing to attend Michigan State University’s Student Apparel Design Association‘s annual fashion show with me. She secured press passes for us which made it easier for me to photograph the runway. First of course we gobbled up delicious food at Michigan Brewing Company with a couple friends, Haley and Karrin who are absolute dolls. After dinner we headed backstage at the Lansing Center to snap some photos and get a sneak peak at the collections. Too bad hair and make up was already finished, I wanted to photograph that process!

For this particular show, the students selected a piece of art to serve as inspiration for their collection and it was amazing, ranging from Andy Warhol’s pop art to Ansel Adam’s photography.

I bought this romper when I was in Philadelphia and I absolutely love it. I like that it covers up a lot up top since the bottom is so short. It’s been freezing in Lansing the last couple days which allowed me to bust out the hat one last time before it gets too warm.

hair timeline and memories

Tieka is on her way over today and I started thinking about when we first started hanging out. I referred back to my embarrassing livejournal and recovered a few embarrassing pictures to share. Everyone knows me now for my big, curly, blonde hair but back in the day I did everything to change it. I used to submit photos on a few hair related blogs before so I have quite the extensive archive of hair photos, but can’t remember my photobucket password! Here is a shortened timeline of the myspace-esque images of my past hair phases. It makes me laugh.

The two-toned look. I sported variations of this, adding brown, black or red. BAHAHA.

Then I wanted to try red. I was convinced by my stylist this color would be flattering..

My brother Chad and I with the red hair still

Shortly after, I had that red stripped from my hair and replaced it with more natural tones..

Tieka, Kimmi and I back in the day. Before I started to over process my hair and when Tieka wore hers curly people would always get us confused. I need to dig up photos from high school to eventually show you all.

I forget how blonde Tieka used to keep her hair!
Sorry this post had nothing to do with fashion!

spring things I like

Katy of Modly Chic asked if I was interested in participating in a weekly question/answer on my blog about fashion/beauty and it sounds fun, so here we go!

What is your favorite spring trend?
I’m loving the pastel and nude colors that are hot this spring. I’m needing a pair of nude heels ASAP! Right now, I’m obsessed with these Steve Madden platform clogs. I drool over them every time I see them in stores.

After seeing Taylor of Sterling Style rock such pretty pinks I’ve made my own attempts so far

What’s your favorite part about this time of the year?
Everyone comes out of hibernation in Michigan at the first sign of spring (which is usually a tease because you can almost guarantee more snow fall even after a beautiful, summer-esque day in April). Sometimes I forget how many people live in Lansing until the first nice spring day and I see tons and tons of people walking dogs, riding bikes, shopping, etc and everyone is in such a jolly mood! I love sitting on patios grabbing lunch and drinks in the evening meeting up with friends and people watching in the city.

What clothing item are you excited about pulling out of storage for spring?
Actually this winter I bought some spring/summer items on sale from last season that have been waiting patiently to be worn! One of my favorite purchases is a yellow French Connection tank. I’m ready to venture out of my usual colors of black and grey this spring and summer!

This week is a super busy week for me! It involves working on a huge grant, a trip to Chicago, countless meetings, photography sessions and executing an event my interns and I organize. I definitely feel like I don’t have enough time to get everything done that I need to such as my class work and other personal projects, but I prefer to be burning the candle at both ends than have a moment of boredom. While this week I’ve had to make some sacrifices to get more precedent things finished, I’m going to try my best to stay on track and get everything done that I want to get done. Vague, I know but I could write pages on β€œstuff” that needs to get done as it relates to work, school, etc.

I headed out to Chicago on Monday to attend a PRSA seminar on strategic planning all day on Tuesday. I stayed with one of my besties, Courtney and her boyfriend, Ben. That morning I felt like I was a third grader getting dropped off on the first day of school when Ben dropped Court and I at the train stop. Like a careful dad would, he waited for us to get inside before pulling away and we waved goodbye. Then Courtney came all the way downtown and walked me to the Hilton Suites to make sure I made it to the right place before she headed off to work. I love them. I didn’t bring my camera, but when I visit Court and Ben for a weekend next month I’ll have lots of pictures to share of their cuteness and their fabulous new apartment.

Lily kept trying to sneak in!

I wore this last Friday and stopped over at my mom’s on my way to Tieka’s. I thought this outfit would fit the scenery of the barn/pasture in the backyard.

It was a little too cold to just sport the jean shorts so I added my favorite AA polka dot tights. I don’t like feeling too cutesy and so the situation called for a pair of biker boots to toughen up my look. I paired the boots with my favorite fringed, shoulder-padded sweater and shorts. I gave my style-resistant mommy this purse last week when I was in town so I used it for one last time! So long purse, hopefully my mom won’t destroy you too quickly!

windy city wandering

A month ago when Tieka asked if I was interested in meeting up with fellow bloggers in Chicago, I exclaimed “Yes!” This became an excuse to shop, catch up with Tieka and meet some amazing ladies. I spent the night at Tieka’s Friday night. Since her hubby was off recording their band’s next album, it was officially a sleepover and I got to sleep on Brett’s side of the bed! Haha! She has the cutest cats named Ultra Mega and Sergeant Death hehehe. Theyre fat, hairy and cute, but a tad creepy. They sit and stare at you constantly. Just this morning I was explaining to her how Ultra Mega was creepily staring at me while I sat on the couch and she nonchalantly responds, “oh they ALWAYS do that. Just look at Sarg” And I look over into the kitchen and off in the distance is this cat staring straight into my soul.

Anyways, We spent the day shopping and doing lots of walking. Tieka and I are both..well lazy so we frequented any opportunity to take a break and sit down. I bought these amazing cut offs from Levis that day and changed into them immediately. I was sweating so much ha.

Tieka! My little ray of sunshine
We met up with Between Laundry Days, Caffeinerd, Sartoriography, Clothes, inter alia, Makeunder My Life, Defying My Closet, and Fashion Therapist. I love when a group of strangers can get together and have so much to talk about. It was so interesting to learn about the other girls–what their interests are, about their careers and why and how they started their blog. We also enjoyed some delicious food and drinks from Quartino’s. Nom nom!
