Fitness Friday: Make it Fun

If you discount my pathetic senior year of cross country, I participated in my first ever 5K last weekend, but at a walking pace..and with my dog. My dog James is in his absolute happy place when he’s surrounded by other dogs and people and I couldn’t deny him of that and the exercise that comes along with it. So we joined up with our friends Katherine and Steve. They brought their lab Charlie and then James and Charlie were instant pals (at least in James’ warped mind.)
I was especially happy to participate to help the local humane society and get some extra exercise in. Forms of exercise disguised as a good time like this 5K are things I’d like to participate in more often. In the past, I’ve avoided nature at all costs and now I’d like to do more horseback/trail riding with my mom and maybe even try hiking. What types of exercise/fun are your favorite? I need more ideas!

    I am not a fan of cardio. I can dance like a maniac, though, and that is the only form of exercise that doesn't feel like exercise for me. Good for you for doing the 5K. Walking it is still great exercise and got you out in the crisp pre-fall weather! Your dog is too freaking cute. Cheers and have a great weekend in Vegas! (*jealous*) ๐Ÿ™‚

    Biking is awesome, and if you can find cycling clubs in your area you can usually find group rides any day of the week. They post their speed and distance so you know which ones you'd be comfortable doing, and it's safer and more fun than riding alone!

    Get out in nature! Do some hiking; it changes you for the better. Plan a trip out west to Yosemite or Glacier, or east to Acadia or White Mountains. There's always the U.P., Sleeping Bear, and national forests in MI, but the mountains take your breath away – literally and figuratively speaking. Even just a brisk walk surrounded by trees and nature is good for the soul.

    I love trail running, especially in the fall. But at the gym I never miss HIIT class, hip hop, and cardio kick boxing. I think doing something different everyday is the best way to keep it fun. Plus having a dog…mine makes sure I get some activity in even on my rest days.
